Artist Biography
Robert Lue Bennett is a South Dakota-based visual artist whose work combines realistic imagery with symbolic storytelling, often exploring themes of time, memory, and the relationship between people and the land.
Bennett received his early artistic training in Columbia, South Carolina, where he studied acrylic and watercolor techniques under the mentorship of Harry and Dee Hansen of the University of South Carolina. He later completed coursework in Graphic Communications at Clemson University, developing technical skills in design, composition, and visual production that continue to inform his large-scale work. Following his studies, Bennett served in the United States Navy, an experience that shaped his interest in travel, landscape, and storytelling, before returning to his work as a visual artist.
Throughout his career, Bennett has created commissioned paintings, murals, and public artworks across the United States and the United Kingdom. His work has been featured in gallery exhibitions, publications, and commissioned projects for private collectors, musicians, and scientists. In addition to his studio work, Bennett has extensive teaching experience and has worked as an independent painting instructor in South Dakota, Florida, and Washington, teaching private lessons as well as group classes and workshops for both adults and young students.
Bennett currently serves as Artist-in-Residence with the Rushmore Music Festival in Rapid City. In this role, he directs interdisciplinary projects combining visual art and music, including teaching creative classes for young musicians during the Festival’s six-week summer program, producing live paintings during public performances, and creating large-format artworks for community outreach initiatives such as the Painted Violin Project and Project BeethoVAN.
Most recently, Bennett self-published his first children’s book, The Adventures of Mischievous Max, which he authored and illustrated in full. The project was supported in part by a South Dakota Arts Council Career Development Grant and will be the focus of upcoming presentations and book-reading events at elementary schools, libraries, and community programs.
